What Is the Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique?

Also known as Pinhole Gum Rejuvenation® and nicknamed “the lunchtime gum lift,” PST is a scalpel-free, suture-free procedure developed by Dr. John Chao for the treatment of gum recession.

It’s a fantastic alternative to the surgical tissue grafting that’s typically used to treat receded gums. There’s no need for donor tissue or an extended healing period while the sewn-in material joins with the existing gum tissue.

Pinhole Gum Rejuvenation is done by using a needle to make a small hole in the receded gum tissue. Dr. Emma then uses specially designed instruments to loosen the gum tissue and guide it over the exposed root before placing collagen at the site to stabilize the tissues as they heal.

Since there’s no cutting and no suturing, you can expect easy healing, with minimal pain, swelling, or bleeding. And you’ll be able to see the cosmetic improvement right away.

Benefits of Pinhole Gum Rejuvenation

  • Less invasive: PST doesn’t require cutting or stitches, unlike traditional gum grafts. That means less pain and discomfort for you.
  • A quicker procedure: Multiple teeth can be treated in a single session with the Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique, making it faster than traditional gum grafting.
  • No donor tissue needed: Unlike gum grafts, the procedure doesn’t require taking tissue from another part of the mouth or using donor tissue.
  • Faster recovery: Patients usually recover within 24 hours, while gum grafting typically takes about two weeks of recovery time.
  • Lower risk of complications: Due to its minimally invasive nature, PST has a lower risk of infection and other complications compared to traditional grafting.
  • Immediate results: Patients can see an improved appearance of their gums right after the Chao Pinhole procedure.
